Na Madri do início do Século XX, Soledad (Sarita Montiel) é uma vendedora de violetas na rua que conhece o aristocrata Fernando (Raf Vallone). O casal apaixona-se, mas a sua diferença social ameaça o romance. Abandonando todas as convenções sociais e escandalizando a alta sociedade, Fernando instala Soledad num apartamento e anuncia seu noivado, mas quando seu irmão morre em uma tentativa de salvar a honra da família, ele decide terminar o romance. Abandonada, Soledad começa uma pobre carreira de cantora. Algum tempo depois ela conhece o produtor francês Henri (Frank Villard), que a leva para começar uma carreira meteórica na França. Mas apesar de casados e envolvidos com outras pessoas, Soledad e Fernando nunca conseguem esquecer um do outro... Raffaele Vallone OMRI (17 February 1916 – 31 October 2002), better known as Raf Vallone, was an Italian actor, footballer, and journalist.

One of the top Italian male stars of the 1950s and 1960s, he first became known for his association with the neorealist movement. His performance in Sidney Lumet’s 1962 film adaptation of A View from the Bridge won him the David di Donatello for Best Actor.
In 1994, he was made a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for his contributions to the arts.
Born in Tropea, Calabria, the son of a lawyer, Vallone attended Liceo classico Cavour in Turin, studied law and philosophy at the University of Turin, and entered his father's law firm. He played professional football at a young age, playing in Serie A for Torino. He won the Coppa Italia with his team in the 1935–1936 season. He subsequently became the editorial head of the culture section of L'Unità, then the official newspaper of the Italian Communist Party, and also a film and drama critic for the Turin newspaper La Stampa. During World War II, Vallone served with the Communist resistance.[1][2]
His first film appearance was as a sailor in We the Living (1942), but Vallone was not initially interested in an acting career. Nevertheless, he was cast as a soldier competing with Vittorio Gassman for the love of Silvana Mangano in Riso amaro (Bitter Rice) (1949). The film became a neo-realist classic and Vallone was launched on an international career. In 2001, he published his autobiography, L'alfabeto della memoria, with Gremese (Rome). Vallone was married to actress Elena Varzi from 1952 until his death. They had three children, two of whom are actors, Eleonora Vallone and Saverio Vallone.
He died from a heart attack in Rome on 31 October 2002.

La statura artistica e culturale di Raf Vallone è stata ricordata il 5 novembre 2002, in occasione della sua scomparsa, su RAI UNO a "Novecento", trasmissione condotta da Pippo Baudo. Per più di mezz'ora, presenti i figli dell'attore Arabella, Eleonora e Saverio, sono stati raccontati eventi ed aneddoti appartenuti all'attore, allo scrittore, al regista, che si impose alla platea dello spettacolo mondiale fin dal 1949 con "Riso amaro". In studio, con Pippo Baudo, c'erano Daniela Poggi, Giancarlo Magalli, Paolo Mosca e Pamela Villoresi che lavorò a fianco di Raf nel film televisivo "Marco Visconti".

Trama
Francesca è una cameriera d'albergo e non una ladra. Su istigazione del fidanzato, Walter, ruba però una collana e scappa. Sul treno si mescola alle mondine e la sera proprio una di queste, Silvana (Silvana Mangano), gliela ruba. A quel punto arriva Walter che capisce subito come andranno a finire le cose e seduce Silvana. Ma tutto questo non è importante perché...

Nell'Italia rurale del secondo dopoguerra, un dramma della seduzione che fece epoca e sbancò i botteghini. Mai gli interpreti furono così ben calati nella parte. La Mangano in calze nere tra l'acqua delle risaie è l'equivalente italiano della Marilyn a gonna alzata sulla grata del metrò.
Primo film "neorealista" che ebbe grande successo di pubblico. Perchè? Il regista De Santis ambiva realizzare un film in cui il tema realistico - la vita delle mondine - si abbinasse ad un dramma "spettacolare" cui il pubblico dell'epoca era assai più favorevole.
