Tonga’s Shirtless Flag Bearer: 5 Things To Know About The Greased Muscle Man

http://hollywoodlife.com/2016/08/06/who-is-tonga-flag-bearer-shirtless-man-rio-olympics-2016-opening-ceremony/

There’s no question Tonga’s shirtless, glistening flag bearer was THE standout star of the 2016 Olympic opening ceremony. But just who is the gorgeous human being who set the Internet ablaze with his perfectly oiled body and abs of steel? Find out who the man behind the muscles is right here!

Ladies, let’s be real. With the world’s top athletes all in one place, there was just one man you could not keep your eyes off of during the 2016 Olympics opening ceremony on Aug. 5 — Pita Taufatofua, aka Tonga’s incredibly hunky flag bearer! In fact, the buff, shirtless man caused SUCH a stir that the Internet could not stop talking about him and his greased up washboard abs!

But of course there’s much more to Pita than meets the eye! Check out our five fast facts about the hottie below, and tell us, what do you think about the man behind the muscles?  No Cable TV? Relax! Click Here To Learn How To Watch The Olympics Online.

1. Pita is in his 30s.

This ridiculously good-looking man is 32 years old; not too young, not too old — we’ll take it!

2. He’s a taekwondo athlete.

Obviously Pita’s super toned bod had to come from somewhere, right? Turns out, the Olympian works out for about six hours every day and trains like crazy! In Rio he’ll be competing for the gold in the taekwondo competition — and back at home he’s quite a star. He qualified for the Olympics through the Oceania taekwondo qualification tournament back in April, according to USA Today. Before this year he had tried two other times to make it to the Olympics.

3. He’s also a model.

We definitely saw this one coming. I mean, it would be wrong NOT to plaster this beautiful face all over magazines and billboards. And one of the companies he’s modeled for? Ugg Australia…which brings us to #4!

4. He doesn’t actually live in Tonga!

Pita is Tonga’s first-ever taekwondo athlete, pretty impressive, right? However, he was born in Australia and now lives and trains in Auckland, New Zealand, according to his official biography. He chose to compete for Tonga because of his father’s heritage. Tonga, which is a small Pacific Island with a population of 105,000, has just seven athletes competing in Rio.

5. He has a heart of gold.

In his spare time, Pita works with homeless kids. In fact, a web page on generosity.com to raise money for his training indicates that he “sacrificed his whole adult life working in homeless shelters with the underprivileged.” Wow — this guy DEFINITELY has it all!

Pita Nikolas Taufatofua is the first Tongan to qualify for the Rio Olympic in August after he won a gold medal in the Taekwondo Oceania Olympic Qualification Tournament in Port Moresby, PNG last on Saturday.

Pita competed in the +80 kg category, and as it could be expected it was a tough battle all the way. In his two final bouts, the semi-final against a Papua New Guinean, he won by one point 4-3.

He went on to win his final bout against the New Zealand Heavy Weight Champion Daffyd Sanders, ranked the number 1 Fighter in Oceania, and number 15 in the World.

However, it was a fight to the end for the win. At the end of the three rounds bout it was a draw 2-2 points. They went into a fourth ‘Golden Round’ with “the first to score point wins”, and Pita came out victorious, winning the Gold medal and a place at the Rio Olympic.

Taekwondo was introduced to Tonga 20 years ago and Pita Taufatofua is the first Tongan athlete to qualify for the Olympics in Taekwondo. He will be one of 128 Taekwondo fighters who will be battling for medals in Rio in August.

Hours before the start of the Olympics Opening Ceremonies, Pita Taufatofua posted a status on Facebook that read, "Olympic opening Ceremony tonight! Pumped! We have a little surprise.. Don’t blink or you’ll miss it." Based on the amount of Instagram followers he now has, it's safe to say that no one missed it. The 32-year-old sent the Internet into a frenzy last night after appearing as a flag bearer at the Opening Ceremonies. With his chiseled abs, sparkling smile, and greased-up body, people couldn't help but take to Twitter and gush over the taekwondo competitor

Taufatofua was born in Australia, but raised in Tonga. He is half Tongan, and began practicing taekwondo at age 5. His Instagram profile reads, "My dream was to become a Taekwondo Olympian I now live that dream! We Can Change the World!"

Taufatofua was born in Australia on November 5, 1983, which makes him a Scorpio. He grew up in Tonga, a Polynesian sovereign state comprised of more than 170 islands, and located in the South Pacific Ocean. In the course of his Olympic training, he’s acquired a number of broken bones and ligaments, spent three months in a wheelchair, a year and a half on crutches, and he’s spent hundred of hours in physical therapy.

Taufatofua, who is studying for his Masters, raised funds for his training and trip to the Olympics via Generosity, which is part of Indiegogo. According to his Generosity page, “Pita sacrificed his whole adult life working in homeless shelters with the underprivileged to show and teach people the power of self belief.” His Instagram presence indicates a love of memes, badass selfies, and cute kids, and a dislike of activities that require shirts. These are all interests we can get behind!
