THE Queen has revealed the grim reality of her glamorous Coronation Day, and confessed the two hour Golden State Coach ride from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey (and back) was “horrible”.

Reflecting on the momentous day in a new BBC TV programme, Her Majesty has given unprecedented insight into the occasion 65 years on.

Although the ceremony was picture perfect on television with all the pomp and ceremony Britain could muster, the Queen spoke candidly about the realities of the day.

When watching back scenes of herself, aged 25, travelling in the Gold State Coach she admits the journey was “horrible” suggesting the lack of suspension made the ride unbearable.

She said: “Its only sprung on leather. Not very comfortable.”

In the trailer, the Queen is also heard discussing the Crown Jewels.

With a smile, she says: “There are some disadvantages to the crowns, but otherwise, they’re quite important things.”

While she doesn’t say what the disadvantages are, many others have spoken about the sheer weight of the Crown Jewels.

St Edward’s Crown, which the Queen has only worn for her Coronation, weighs a staggering 5lb, 2.3kg.

In one scene the Queen watches footage of Prince Charles and Princess Anne playing with her robe.

The presenter comments: “Such fun for the children.”

To which Her Majesty dryly responds: “Not what they’re meant to do.”

The programme is hosted by Alastair Bruce, a Coronation expert, and her Majesty will discuss the day from her perspective, as the “beginning of one’s life really, as a sovereign.”

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said: “In the programme, part of the Royal Collection season, the Queen reflects on various aspects of the Coronation ceremony and the significance of the Crown Jewels

The Queen will also talk about her father’s coronation in the interview.

She is seen saying: “ “I’ve seen one coronation, and been the recipient in the other, which is pretty remarkable.”

The rare interview with the monarch will be broadcast on BBC One on Sunday, January 14 at 8pm.

It will also feature eyewitness accounts from the then-12-year-old choirboy left to sing solo when his overwhelmed colleagues lost their voice, and a maid of honour who also fainted in the Abbey.
