Porgy & Bess is a jazz and music club with a varied program. And one of the top ten jazz clubs in Europe. In addition to the club program with concerts of Austrian and international musicians, the club also focuses on unusual and interesting music.

The program includes musicians, country and city portraits, sessions and workshops, but also special events such as "Jazz for Kids".

Music and travel journalist Adam McCulloch lists the Porgy & Bess among the top ten European jazz clubs. He wrote in the British "Guardian" in February 2016:

"This modern club – with the ambience of a state-of-the-art mini concert hall, and room for 350 – has been designed to present top players to maximum advantage. The crowd at Porgy is respectful and attentive and an evening here is a pleasurable and comfortable experience – depending on who’s playing. A wide variety of top-of-the-range jazz is booked, from dazzling, brash evergreen Cuban heroes Arturo Sandoval and Paquito D’Rivera to the dark experimental broodings of central European virtuosi."

Porgy & Bess was initiated by the versatile Swiss musician Mathias Rüegg who, in 1993, started this project in the former "Fledermaus Bar" – quite unique for the time and place: to invite internationally renowned jazz groups to Vienna.

In the course of a few years, Porgy & Bess became a fixture of the native and international jazz scene and in 2001 moved to new and attractive quarters. The rooms, by the way, have been used since the middle of the nineteenth century for professional and amateur theater groups...
