50th Anniversary Gala
http://www.metopera.org/Season/2016-17-Season/50th-anniversary-gala-tickets/
On September 16, 1966, the Metropolitan Opera opened its doors for the first time in a new home at Lincoln Center, with the world premiere of Samuel Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra, starring Leontyne Price and Justino Díaz. The New York Times declared the opening of the new opera house a “crescendo of splendor,” and a new era of theatrical possibility was born.
Fifty years later, the Met will celebrate its golden anniversary in its current home with a special gala featuring some of the greatest artists in opera, performing a mix of repertory that both looks back at great moments from the past five decades and ahead to future seasons. Selections will be heard from such operas as Porgy and Bess, Samson et Dalila, Les Troyens, I Lombardi, and, for the first time since the house opened, Antony and Cleopatra.
Director and set designer Julian Crouch and projection designers 59 Productions—the forces behind the Met’s 125th Anniversary Gala in 2009—will create an unforgettable operatic celebration of this important milestone.
A special gala dinner will follow the performance.

Happy Birthday, Leontyne Price
http://www.metopera.org/user-information/leontyne-price-birthday/
The Metropolitan Opera celebrates the 90th birthday of soprano Leontyne Price, an American treasure and operatic icon who gave a total of 204 performances with the company. Born on February 10, 1927, Price thrilled audiences in a wide range of roles over a span of nearly 25 years at the Met, even starring in the world premiere of Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra for the opening of the company’s new house at Lincoln Center in 1966. But the composer whose work she performed more than any other is Verdi, starring as five of his heroines during her Met career. Chief among these was Aida, a role she dominated not only at the Met, where she gave 42 performances between 1961 and her farewell performance in 1985, but also at opera houses around the world. Price’s other key roles at the Met included both of Verdi’s Leonoras (in Il Trovatore and La Forza del Destino), Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, and the title roles in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and Tosca. Happy birthday, Leontyne!
